James George

Lecture, Workshop

James George is an artist applying computational photography towards portraiture and storytelling. Through installations and films he addresses the emotional response to science fiction technologies as they become reality. By sharing his code and processes openly, he enables others to express themselves using the techniques he develops. James co-developed the DepthKit, an open source software for 3D cinema using depth sensors. Along with Jonathan Minard, he used this new format to create CLOUDS, an interactive documentary awarded the Prize for Transmedia at Tribeca Film Festival and Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica.

James was the first artist in residence at Microsoft Research in Seattle; Guest Researcher at Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media; Resident at Eyebeam Art+Technology center; and Fellow at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon. He is currently adjunct faculty at NYU Interactive Telecommunication Program. His projects have been exhibited internationally in Europe, South America, Japan, and the United States.
