James Auger at Resonate 2013

James Auger is a designer, researcher and lecturer operating at the intersection of art and industrial design. He is a tutor at the RCA: Design Interactions and visiting professor at the Haute école d’art et de design (HEAD) in Geneva. Together with Jimmy Loizeau, James runs Auger-Loizeau – design studio based in London, and they have been collaborating on projects since the concept of the Audio Tooth Implant which was first conceived in October 2000.

[Industrial] Design is mostly concerned with the process of bringing products to market, making them desirable and therefore saleable. With a slight sideways step, Auger-Loizeau believes that by removing the commercial aspect from the requirements of the object, ID it can adopt a whole different agenda, questioning the process that gives birth to it rather than blindly conforming to it. In this way design can comment on consumer culture, the role of products and the ubiquity and function of technology. It becomes a tool for questioning rather than problem solving. Through the development and dissemination of speculative and critical products and services they hope to instigate a broader analysis of what it means to exist in a technology rich environment both today and in the near future.

Their goal is for this analysis to take place over a broad a spectrum. Thus their work may be seen anywhere from Wired magazine to The Sun newspaper, or as a demo in a public square in Linz to an exhibition in Beijing. Many of their projects are self-generated and self-funded but they also participate in industry funded research projects, commissions, workshops and the very occasional commercial project.

Alain Bellet at Resonate 2013

Alain Bellet is Professor at ECAL/University of art and design Lausanne. He is heading since 6 years the Media & Interaction Design unit (M&ID). His teaching approach is mainly based on experimentation with students dealing within different contexts in the so-called digital creation field. Those contexts are going from data visualisation to tangible interfaces for digital devices.

Holding a degree in Graphic Design he moved ten years ago, shortly after graduating, to screen based medias by developing websites and digital presences for different actors in the cultural field. He is now sharing his time between Lausanne and Zurich where he lives and works in his own practice, developing online projects and more recently apps. The last in date is an experimental digital catalogue on the form of an iPad app developed for the french designers duo, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. His interests are in the crossing of visual communication and the use of new technologies. He has always been more interested by dystopia than utopia and until now, he never worn an HMD (Head mounted display).

Evan Boehm at Resonate 2013

Evan Boehm is an animator and film director who utilizes technology to express his thoughts and ideas because he can’t draw. With a background in coding and motion graphics, his work ranges from open source music videos to interactive web films to digital installations, always expressing his interest in narrative structures and character interaction. He also art directed parts of the latest Call of Duty game which doesn’t deal with any of that.

Evan is a recent recipient of the Adobe Cutting Edge Award for his web film The Carp and the Seagull and is an interactive director at Nexus Interactive Arts in London.

Studio NAND at Resonate 2013

Studio NAND explores interactions between society, science and technology using design as a methodology to craft engaging experiences, stories and visualisations.

They consult and work with private and public sector organisations with the aim to identify new ways of using design and upcoming technologies. Their clients include major corporations, cultural organisations and research institutes, such as the German Telekom, Cultural Olympiad, and Disney Research Pittsburgh. Their work has been recognised internationally at the Siggraph Emerging Technologies Exhibition, the MoMA New York, the Venice Biennale, ARS Electronica and the Beijing Design Week, amongst others.

Joachim Sauter at Resonate 2013

After graduating from the academy of fine arts in Berlin, Joachim Sauter studied at the ‘German Academy for Film and Television’, Berlin. Since the early 1980s, he has been working as a media artist and designer. From the beginning, Joachim Sauter has focussed on digital technologies and is experimenting how they can be used to express content, form, and narration. Fuelled by this interest, he founded ART+COM in 1988 together with other artists, designers, scientists and technologists.Their goal was to practically research this new up-and-coming medium in the realm of art and design. Until now, he is leading this interdisciplinary group.

In the course of his work he was invited to participate on many exhibitions. Beside others he showed his work at ‘Centre Pompidou’ Paris, ‘Stejdilik Museum’ Amsterdam, ‘Museum for Contemporary Art’ Sidney, ‘Deichtorhallen Hamburg’ , Kunsthalle Wien, ‘Venice Biennial’,'ICC’ Tokyo, ‘Getty Center’ Los Angeles, MAXXI Rom.

He received several awards like the ‘Golden Lion, Cannes’, the ‘D&AD Black Pencil’, the ‘Ars Electronica Interactive Award’, the ‘British Academy for Film and Television Interactive Award’, ADC New York and ADC Germany Gold, the ‘Grand Clio’, the ‘Red Dot Grand Prix’, the “Designaward of the Federal Republic of Germany” and many other national and international awards’.

Since 1991 he is full professor for “New Media Art and Design” at the ‘University of the Arts’ Berlin and since 2001 adjunct professor at UCLA, Los Angeles.

Klaus Obermaier at Resonate 2013

Since more than two decades media-artist, director/choreographer and composer Klaus Obermaier creates innovative works in the area of performing arts, music, theatre and new media, highly acclaimed by critics and audience.

His inter-media performances and artworks are shown at festivals and theaters throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America and Australia. He worked with dancers of the Nederlands Dans Theater, Chris Haring, Robert Tannion (DV8), Desireé Kongerød (S.O.A.P. Dance Theatre Frankfurt) … He composed for ensembles like Kronos Quartet, German Chamber Philharmonics, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Balanescu Quartet, among others.

Since 2006 he is visiting professor at the University IUAV of Venice teaching directing and new media. Also since 2006 he is jury member of the international choreography competition ‘no ballet’ in Ludwigshafen/Rhein, Germany. In 2005 and 2008 he taught as an adjunct professor for composition at the Webster University Vienna. In 2010 and 2011 he held courses for choreography and new media at the Accademia Nazionale di Danza di Roma. He gives lectures at international universities and institutions.

Kyle McDonald at Resonate 2013

Kyle McDonald is a media artist who works with code, with a background in philosophy and computer science. He creates intricate systems with playful realizations, sharing the source and challenging others to create and contribute. Kyle is a regular collaborator on arts-engineering initiatives such as openFrameworks, having developed a number of extensions which provide connectivity to powerful image processing and computer vision libraries. For the past few years, Kyle has applied these techniques to problems in 3D sensing, for interaction and visualization, starting with structured light techniques, and later the Kinect. Kyle’s work ranges from hyper-formal glitch experiments to tactical and interrogative installations and performance.

He was recently Guest Researcher in residence at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media, Japan, and is currently adjunct professor at ITP.
